Rachel has presented Redditch hero Pete Martin with his Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister.
Rishi Sunak has recognised the self-defence instructor’s efforts to tackle knife crime in Redditch.
Pete has been teaching self-defence classes since 1989, but it was after a friend was stabbed 12 years ago and nearly died that Pete realised he wanted to do more to engage with young people and prevent them from carrying knives, particularly those at risk of criminal exploitation.
Working closely with West Mercia Police, Pete educates young people about the impact of knife crime and has designed a “Jab Don’t Stab” programme using boxing to divert those at risk of offending. He has given free anti-knife crime classes to over 30,000 young people in Redditch.
Pete has also worked with local businesses to install bleed kits across the town, ensuring first aid assistance is more accessible and helping to save lives.
Rachel said: “It was an honour to present Pete with the Points of Light Award on behalf of the Prime Minister.
"I don’t use the word hero lightly, but in Pete’s case it’s absolutely true.
“I’m certain his work has saved countless lives and prevented young people from turning to a life of crime.
“We’re incredibly lucky to have Pete and I will forever be grateful for all that he’s done.”
