Rachel has hailed the ‘game-changing’ decision to perform state-of-the-art robotic-assisted surgery at the Alexandra Hospital.
On Monday (August 15th), Rachel visited the Alex to see the progress that has been made to upgrade an operating theatre to make way for Rory the Robot.
Contractors have been site to reinforce the theatre floor to take the weight of the robot as well as upgrading the ventilation system, general refurbishment and redecoration.
The first procedure to be offered by the new service will be robot-assisted prostate surgery for men with prostate cancer. It’s hoped the Alex will be providing robotic surgery by the end of the year.
Rachel said: “It was an inspiring visit to the Alex to see the work that has been underway to bring game-changing robotic surgery to our hospital.
“I heard directly from surgeons who told me how robotic-assisted Radical Prostatectomy surgery can offer equivalent or better outcomes, less pain, shorter stays in hospital and quicker recovery for patients with prostate cancer.
“I believe we can welcome investment in our hospital whilst also continuing to fight for the return of a maternity and children’s service.
“I remember a time when the Trust told me we wouldn’t be getting Rory the Robot. Now look where we are. Anything is possible.”
