Rachel Maclean, MP for Redditch County, is working hard for her constituents – and that’s official.
After having been in office now for nearly nine months, official figures show her to be among the top performers in a number of areas. For example, House of Commons Library figures show Rachel is 49th out of 637 MPs, with 114 contributions to debates since the beginning of the current Parliament. And today (Wednesday), in advance of International Women’s Day on 8 March, Rachel was called to ask her first Prime Minister’s Question. She asked Theresa May to acknowledge the ground-breaking work carried out by Conservative Governments to promote the interests of women in society – including having two female Prime Ministers.
Since elected last June, Rachel has received some 50,000 e-mails on a wide range of issues and topics. As a result, she has sent out thousands of letters and e-mails responding to residents’ issues and concerns.
Rachel said: “Most MPs work very hard – this is definitely a lifestyle choice rather than a job, and certainly more so than any other job that I’ve ever done!
“I have been in office for nearly nine months now, and it’s been a whirlwind, and I fully appreciate that there are different measures of hard work, but hopefully constituents will appreciate that I am continually striving to put out the name of Redditch and issues surrounding it in Parliament.
“The point about the number of contributions in Parliament isn’t just a matter of statistics, it means Ministers listen to the voice of Redditch and my constituents, for example, pushing forward the grant funding bid on the Alex and providing more resources for adult social care in the recent local government finance settlement.
“As a local resident myself now, I work hard to try and push forward local issues such as the Alex, and look for opportunities to press the cases of individual constituents whenever I can.”
